Star Search
Attention all
fame whoresundiscovered talent! There’s a new way to get noticed and it couldn’t be easier. If you somehow managed to not make it onto one of the many talent search TV shows like American Idol, Next Top Model or Last Comic Standing fret no more. Just stroll on up to the MyStudio personal recording booth and give it another shot.
It’s likely that you’ve driven past the 944 offices on The Sunset Strip and noticed a futuristic looking pod. This, my friends, is a MyStudio. Don’t be afraid; it’s actually a very simple concept and easy to use. “MyStudio is a self-contained, state-of-the-art, high definition (HD) audio/video recording studio that offers consumers access to true professional recording studio-quality audio and HD broadcast-quality video with an ease, economy and convenience never before available.” $20 will buy you a whole five minutes to record anything you’d like from a stand up comedy act to a video job resume or a dating video. The hope though is that it will be used as a tool for discovering talent. In fact, they have even partnered up to sponsor a number of contests including one to be a cruise ship singer and another to perform at The Comedy Store on Sunset. In Arizona they even held a search for a real life Elle Woods to walk the pink carpet at the opening of Legally Blonde the Musical. So that’s all the info, but now I have to be honest. I see a number of flaws with this “studio.” For starters, there are currently only three of them- Los Angeles, Scottsdale and New York. Understandablely, these are cities that focus on entertainment and it would make sense that people in these markets would want access to something like this. However, there are so many other options for “being discovered” in these cities that I can’t imagine that someone really looking to make it would seek out this studio. Now, if they were to lower the price and stick one of these in the middle of Montana or Kentucky, maybe there would be a real chance of finding some talent. At the very least, it would likely attract a lot of hopefuls that have no chance of getting to LA or New York to give it a shot.
Also, having had the chance to play around in the MyStudio myself, it seems that it would be most successful serving as a high-tech alternative to traditional karaoke. Bars could hold contests with it and it’d be perfect to rent out for private parties. All and all, it’s pretty cool and the quality of the video is just amazing. There are just a few things to tweek, in my opinion. You never know though- you could step in, hit record and get discovered. It worked for Elvis!
P.S. They are currently running a contest to win tickets to see Kanye West and Lady Gaga. Record a video between now and November 4th and the one with the most votes wins!
